After finishing in second place in 2024, Cape Town claimed the number-one spot for 2025 in the British-based company’s rankings.

The results were based on opinions from 18,500 people around the world who weighed in on their city as per the seventh Time Out global survey of city-dwellers.

Eskom board chairman and industry leader Mteto Nyati is bullish about South Africa’s prospects, pointing to increased investments by hyperscalers, subsea cables landing in the country and artificial intelligence’s (AI’s) potential as key signs to consider.

This is despite the country experiencing electricity and water supply constraints, law and order issues, joblessness and slow economic growth, among other issues.

Despite economic headwinds, SA’s global business services (GBS) sector is not only one of the fastest growing sectors but is set for rapid growth in the coming year.

This is according to industry body Business Processing Enabling South Africa (BPESA), which reveals government’s economic growth targets can become a reality, as SA sees a steady flow of investment into the GBS sector.

This comes as the industry body readies to the annual BPESA GBS|BPO Conference 2024, in partnership

South Africa’s global business services (GBS) sector added 8 847 jobs between January to June this year, contributing $142 million (R2.5 billion) to the country’s export revenue.

This is according to non-profit organisation Business Process Enabling South Africa’s (BPESA’s) quarterly GBS Sector Job Creation Report.

BPESA notes that 60% of these jobs are empowerment positions, with 88% of these new jobs going to the country's youth.
